I had planned quite a sweet little theme party for Rachel (with the help of some others). This had to be thrown out the window, though, once we received news that we were headed to Ethiopia! In Ethiopia, they stuck by the Orthodox calendar, so they are seven years behind the rest of us. So, Rachel got to re-visit her 19th birthday all over again!
Once in Addis Ababa (the capital), we were excited to spend the day celebrating Meskal and Rachel's B-day. Meskal is the celebration of the True Cross, the day that Ethiopians believe that the Queen of Sheba brought the cross of Jesus to Ethiopia. It's a day filled with song and dance, that ends in a huge bonfire. (I still haven't quite figured out why!)
Other highlights of Rachel's birthday, in no particular order:
- Eating french fries with quality ketchup (hard to come by in Sudan)
- Drinking beer (you know why)
- Having her camera pick-pocketed (and then stealing it right back and scaring away the thefts)
- Running away from a mad bull (No, really...this bull went psycho and we had to run, run, run! One woman got rolled and another two men smooshed up against a car before they managed to get him down a sewer hole!)
- Being a teenager all over again!

You really did arrange some very special stuff for Rachel's birthday. The bull was a nice touch. She'll never forget this one.
