Ok...have you been yearning for photos from phase two of the vacation--Uganda? I know, I know! Everyone wants to see the animal photos. We have quite a few, but you'll just have to suffer through these for the mean time! (After all, there's not much going on here in Khartoum...so we have to make the posts last!)
This is our friend, Timothy, who works for the UN in Khartoum and his wife, Betty. He was back in Uganda for Christmas vacation and was happy to show us around Kampala. (You might recognize him from the Ugandan Ambassador's Bash?)We got quite the cultural experience at Timothy's friend's kids' baptism party at the finest cultural center in Kampala!
Timothy promised that even though WE hadn't been formally invited, it would be fine for us to tag along. (I'm beginning to think that any formal invitation in Africa also comes with an automatic +5 attached, no questions asked.)
The whole shin-dig went on all day, from 2-11. There was lots of preaching (in a tribal language that we don't understand), singing, drumming and dancing. You can imagine what was my favorite part. (Especially the pot dancers--below--which is from a tribe in Northern Uganda near the Sudanese border.)Lucky us...we even got acknowledged and had to stand up while about 250 people applauded. (As if they didn't already know we were crashing the party!) Somehow Rachel managed to skip out at the opportune moment, avoiding any embarrassment.
