Feminine Fatour

Ok, from what I can figure out "fatour" mean "iftar". So, we've been fatouring quite a bit lately, as you can tell. I guess the tradition is that the closer to Eid (the final days of Ramadan), the bigger the Fatours are.

You might remember our friendly neighbors we dined with a week or so ago. They had kept pestering us to make our way inside, with the women. Alas! The women grabbed us for their Iftar.

Being foreign women, we really have an advantage, because we can move freely in male and female circles without raising too many eyebrows.

So, while the men are feasting on their fatour on the sidewalks, the women are all piled in the (air conditioned) comforts of their own homes. (And you get to admire the pictures of relatives adorning the walls!) It seems that the whole neighborhood shows up for the women's fete. I would estimate 25-30 women stopped by throughout the night.

This is a pretty well educated, diverse group of women, representing many countries, including: Sudan, Kenya, Yemen, Somalia, Eritrea & Ethiopia. Our food had a little more Kenyan flavor than the typical Sudanese fare. We welcomed the chipati and curry potatoes as we laughed and joked the whole night through. We discussed everything from Bush and Iraq to "covering", Sharia and marriage. We even debated the best men in the world. A woman who had been married three times was adamant--BRAZILIAN! (Although they are too nice!)

So, here's the picture for the scrapbook: the kind womenfolk living next-door, keeping watch over us! (Actually, mom, this one's for you...again!)
